Yes that is right. I call Bullshit on CSUMB. I am done with the requirements that no other school enforces on their students. I have heard so many stories of students who were mislead in their academic plans. Then at the last minute it is discovered that they are missing one class and must stay for another six months in order to fulfil "culture and equity" or some other shit. What the fuck is that anyway? Culture and equity. I'm sure there are some people at this school that know more about culture and the lack of equity in the country than any of those classes will ever teach them.
This brings me to Multi-culturalism. How the fuck are we going to incorporate multiculturalism into every fucking goddamn class there is on campus? Hell make it a goddamn major for christsake. We can call multicultural studies. It can even be part of HCOM. The concentrations for the major can be one from Chicano studies, one from African-American studies and the third, hmm, well there doesn't seem to be another type of culture concentrated on in the HCom Major. Isn't that strange? Well i guess we will just throw Women's studies into that new concentration then. I mean multiculturalism is good right? it doesn't form any kind of stereotypes or anything right? I mean a class called "Relating to Whiteness" is productive right?
Think about that. This class is saying that all white people have it easy. well i can see the perspective thatthis concept comes from because in the bigoted society we live in it is probably true. The problem i have with this class, however, is that it isn't breaking down any stereotypes or enlightening white people to start treating other races and cultures differently. All it does is reinforce societal stereotypes and teach people to point fingers and say, "See its all your fault, I'm the victim."
While i am grateful for the opportunity to earn my undergraduate degree from this institution, i would much rather be some other place because of all the hypocritical and benign bullshit......
I'm Out.
My friends and I are always talking about this. It is silly how many people are unable to transfer to other schools with the number of credits they earned (here at CSUMB) because we have so many classes that no other schools require.
ReplyDeleteOh, silly CSUMB.
CSUMB's system is pretty jacked up, I'll agree with you on that. I know people who were in their 6th year, just because they switched majors, and the requirements didn't mesh - and she wanted to graduate. Then, another friend was mislead because when she transferred here, she was told we would have Chinese classes. Well, nope. Only a proficiency test. She transferred out after 3 semesters.
ReplyDeleteThe CSUMB system is very frustrating for those in the last leg of college and get monkey wrenches thrown into the equation of classes that needed to be taken way back when. So, I think the whole pre-cap and capstone classes should be eliminated b/c its a waste of time and just another ploy to have students spend more money and keep making the university rich...we should just have to take the MLO's and thats it.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya with the multi-culturalism thing. It does totally reinforce the difference s instead of the similarities. If the goal is to create a better society, then the focus should be on what we have in common, not why we are different. And I've been a victim as well, of what many other peoples would call racism. All I'm saying is, the whole idea of multiculturalism, I think, should be changed to uni-culturalism, or something. That would create change.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I'm 30 so I'm not really willing to add any more time to my college education, so I'm kind of stuck here. Just trying to get that piece of paper. There are a lot of classes that I have no interest in, but I know I'll be forced to take. I thought I got all the classes I didn't want out of the way when I did all my general ed and got my AA...
hmmmm... I don't know dookie.. although you have a very good point... if students like myself know what they have to get done, they shouldn't have a problem. I'm with CSU MB on this one bud! ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou said it! That is EXACTALY what happened to me! I'm planning on graduating in May and the DAY BEFORE the drop date I was informed I need some lower division "art and expression" class! C'mon! That is why I got my AA before I came to this school so I wasn't stuck doing freshman work my last semester of college. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteOh WOW! Well done! I transferred in as a Junior to CSUMB and after only 1 semester I wanted out, but true to CSUMB style and bizarre requirements, I was stuck! Wooo Hooo now I get to explain what the hell Human Communications is and why the hell I an qualified for a job for the rest of my life.... Ahhh CSUMB I will not miss it!
